Biography

Marko Mavrovich grew up on several different islands off the coast of his native Croatia, but most of his time was spent on the island of Unije, which was his favorite. It was at this time that the inspiration of the beauty of the Adriatic Sea and coast inspired him to sketch on paper with pencil and charcoal. His father, Miro, was a watercolor artist and encouraged him while his mother was his strongest critic.

At 17, his parents wanted him to attend art school, but instead he chose to enroll in the School of Navigation following his love of the sea. He continued sketching while working on ships “fighting the sea and his feelings for his art.” Still pulled towards his love of the sea, he spent three and one-half years as a commercial diver.

“Being underwater in absolute silence helped me clear my thoughts and to realize that I should return to my love for art.”

Marko, a self-taught artist, was greatly influenced by his father and credits Winslow Homer as one of his greatest influences. Every year, Marko spends some time in Croatia as well as other parts of Europe and gathers inspiration from the beautiful Adriatic coast. He is also inspired by the beauty of the north coast of California.

His passion for capturing the beauty of the ocean remains a constant theme in his artwork – such as the picturesque European villages, the Adriatic Riviera, the coastline of California. In a fashion reminiscent of the French Impressionists, Mavrovich expertly captures the fleeting effects of light on the cool ocean waters and verdant hillsides.

Marko’s artwork has been internationally acclaimed and collected both in the United States, Asia, Europe and especially in his native Croatia.
